Christmas Gifts, 2010!

As a poor student, I found myself with very little cash this year for buying Christmas presents, so decided to make most of my gifts! My wonderful sister, Kimberly, was kind enough to take some creative photos of them for me from halfway across the country (since I forgot before coming back home after the holidays).

Scarves:

The purple scarf I made when I was just getting back into knitting. It is just simple, straight knitting using a very fun wool blend yarn. I did some sparse, long fringe for something a little different, and I think my mom really loved it!

The pink and white scarf was made after the matching hat, because I still had a good bit of the pink yarn left and didn't want it to go to waste. I had orginally planned on making the whole scarf one color, and just using white for the fringe, but about 1/3 of the way through, realized I was going to run out! Luckily I had some white in my bag of the same type and brand, so just threw that in for an accent strip in the middle and think it turned out quite well for improvisation. It is also straight knit and was a present for my sister, Kimberly. As you can see below, cardboard cut-outs of celebrities and anime characters are also enjoying this gift. Haha.

The blue and grey striped scarf was a gift for my dad. It is straight knit and was my first time changing colors properly - not just knotting two pieces of yarn together. I actually knitted it twice the width you see in the photo, and then after turning it inside-out, sewed the sides together with blue yarn and a tapestry needles to create a tube scarf. This is for my dad to wear when my parents move to Idaho where an extra-layer can really come in handy in the winter months! I hear from my mom he's been wearing it constantly since Christmas and stopping people to proudly announce his daughter made it for him. He must really like it :) As does our friend Taylor...

Hats:

To practice purling, I made hats for both my mom and sister. I actually got the green yarn with my grandmother on a trip to Ireland several years ago, and wanted to make something for my mother with the ball I had left. She's started walking/jogging the neighborhood every night, and really needed something to keep her ears warm! I casted on 80 stitches on size 7 round needles for my mom's green hat and 72 for my sister's pink hat. I started both with a "brim" of purling for about 1.5 inches before switching to knitting. I really like the effect and the hat won't roll outwards like it does when you just straight knit. After knitting for 4 inches (a total of 5.5 inches), I placed 4 markers equidistant within the row. I then preceded to knit two together before and after each marker every other row until the stiches became to tight to do anything anymore. Finally, I clipped a long tail and then threaded a new piece of yarn through the remaining loops with a tapestry need, cinched the top, and knotted in the ends inside. For the pom-pom, I wrapped yarn around four fingers until  a had a thick "wad" which I tied together in the middle, leaving the ends long. After clipping all the loops, I trimmed the pom-pom into an even sphere. I finally threaded the two long ends into the top of the hat, and tied them off inside. Ta Da!

Slippers:

I actually made four pairs of these and was sick of them by the time I was done. I do love them though and think they turned out great. I did the purple with lime ties for my mom, the red with purple ties for my sister, lime with purple ties for my grandmother, and blue with purple ties for myself. I used thick lionbrand yarn for everything. The patter can be found here: http://www.mylifetime.com/lifestyle/home-crafts/craft-ideas/needle-arts/moccasin-slippers . I changed the cuff to a K2P2 pattern though (and so picked up stitches in a multiple of 4) because I think it looks better and gives a clearer pattern to weave the ties through. These are super comfy and so easy!

Merry Christmas to my Family!
